Banner

Banner is a typically rectangular advertisement placed on a Web site either above, below or on the sides of the Web site's main content and is linked to the advertiser's own Web site. The word banner derives from late Latin bandum, a cloth out of which a flag is made.

Banner types

Banners can be static and animated.
Typical banner formats are:

• GIF - used mostly for animated banners
• PNG - used for static banners
• JPEG - used for static banners
• Flash - animated banners.

There are two major ways to display banners:

• static banners (do not change, they stay the same to every user, every page load)

• dynamically-rotated banners (can change for each user).

Most common sizes for banners are: 468x60px, 728x90px, 125x125px
